About South End

What makes South End unique

South End grew up in the late 1800s beside Charlotte's first railroad, which drew textile mills such as Atherton Mill and the worker housing around them. As manufacturing faded after World War II, many of the old brick buildings sat empty, until redevelopment turned them into offices, design showrooms, shops and restaurants. The LYNX Blue Line opened in 2007 and gave the district a direct rail link to Uptown, about a mile to the north.

Today South End is one of Charlotte's busiest and fastest-changing neighborhoods. Mid-rise apartments, restored mills, breweries and patios line the 3.5-mile Rail Trail, and more is coming: a new pedestrian crossing opened in August 2026, while a new South End light rail station and a Rail Trail bridge over I-277 are both targeted for about 2028.

Why people are talking about it

  • Four LYNX Blue Line stations: Carson, Bland Street, East/West Boulevard and New Bern
  • The 3.5-mile Rail Trail, with public art such as Rail Trail Lights
  • New pedestrian crossing of the light rail tracks opened August 2026
  • New South End light rail station targeted to open in 2028
  • Rail Trail bridge over I-277 to Uptown expected around 2028
  • South End Market every Saturday at Atherton Mill
