University Area
College-town energy, light rail to Uptown and creekside trails

What makes University Area unique
Charlotte's northeast corner grew up around UNC Charlotte, and it still feels like a college town sitting on top of a major job center. Students, researchers and young families share the area with University Research Park, big-box shopping and wooded creek corridors, and 49ers game days fill fall weekends.
The biggest change is how easy it is to get around. Since 2018 the LYNX Blue Line has run north to campus, a new regional library opened in 2025 near the JW Clay station, and more than $100 million in road, bike and pedestrian projects is underway, including a new bridge over I-85 to link Research Park to campus.
Why people are talking about it
- LYNX Blue Line to Uptown; UNC Charlotte–Main is the northern end
- 8.5 miles of connected greenways: Toby Creek, Mallard Creek and Clarks Creek
- New University City Regional Library opened February 2025
- I-85 bridge connector to Research Park expected around 2028
- Free UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
