What makes NoDa unique

NoDa, short for North Davidson, began in the early 1900s as North Charlotte, a mill village built around three textile mills. Rows of worker cottages surrounded a small main street on North Davidson. After the mills closed, the area struggled for years, until artists began turning empty storefronts into studios and galleries in 1985. By the mid-1990s the NoDa name had stuck and the district had become the city's creative hub.

The LYNX Blue Line extension opened in 2018 and put NoDa a short train ride from Uptown. It also set off a wave of new apartments and townhomes. Murals, independent music venues and craft breweries still define the blocks around North Davidson and 36th Street, and the beloved Neighborhood Theatre reopened in August 2026 after a renovation.
