Dilworth
Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb, still walkable after 130 years

What makes Dilworth unique
Dilworth opened in 1891 as Charlotte's first streetcar suburb. Edward Dilworth Latta built it on former farmland and connected it to downtown by an electric trolley, and the Olmsted Brothers later expanded the plan with the tree-lined, hourglass-shaped Dilworth Road. Its bungalows, Queen Anne cottages and Colonial Revival homes now sit within a National Register historic district.
People stay in Dilworth because so much of daily life is within walking distance. East Boulevard is lined with restaurants in converted houses, Latta Park sits at the center, and Freedom Park and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway are at the neighborhood's edge. Light rail stations in South End are a short walk away, and 2026 brought a new round of openings on East Boulevard.
