Here’s what City Council worked on this week and what’s moving toward construction around Charlotte.

From City Council

Gateway Station: still no date for the next phase

On Monday, Nov 2, Council’s Transportation, Planning and Development Committee got an update on Charlotte Gateway Station, the long-planned Uptown transit hub near Truist Field. The first phase, finished in 2022, added track work and the Amtrak platform. The next phase, a permanent station building with offices and apartments around it, still has no timeline. The city plans to extend its exclusive talks with developer Charlotte Gateway Partners through the end of 2026, and staff recommended stepping up talks with the new regional transit authority (MPTA), which takes over public transit on Jan 1, 2027.

AMIR’S TAKE
Gateway has been “coming soon” for more than a decade. The new transit authority could finally give it an owner with a reason to finish it, but nothing gets built until a deal and a date are set. Until then, I’d treat it as a long-term plus for the west side of Uptown, not something to plan a move around.
Keep in mind: Gateway Station’s next phase has no approved plan, budget or start date yet. Talks with the MPTA could change what gets built and when.

Also on Monday: Council’s Housing Committee got an update on the Queen City ADU Program, launched in 2025 to add affordable rentals in established neighborhoods by helping lower-income homeowners build an accessory dwelling unit (like a backyard cottage) for extra income.

Breaking ground

372 apartments coming to north Charlotte near I-485

Wood Partners announced Oct 29 that it will break ground in November on Village Park, a 372-unit apartment community at Prosperity Church and Benfield roads, in the Highland Creek and Prosperity Church area of north Charlotte. Plans call for seven buildings, a clubhouse with coworking space, a pool and a large park with a pond. Five percent of the homes will be set aside for households earning up to 80% of the area median income. The first homes are expected in May 2028.

AMIR’S TAKE
This is the developer’s third community in the same area, which tells you builders still see steady renter demand on the north side, with I-485 right there and a Publix next door. For nearby homeowners, expect more traffic on Prosperity Church Road during and after construction. For landlords, it’s new competition for renters starting in 2028.
Keep in mind: Opening dates and unit counts come from the developer’s announcement and can change during construction.

Coming up: Council’s next business meeting is Monday, Nov 9, when a vote on the new airline lease at Charlotte Douglas is expected. The next zoning meeting is Monday, Nov 16. And the results of Tuesday’s $425 million city bond vote will be in Friday’s Growth Report, along with what they mean for roads and housing.
