CHARLOTTE SPOTLIGHT · NOVEMBER 2026 · 3-MINUTE READ
A 1915 textile mill on Charlotte’s west side is about to become one of the city’s biggest food destinations. Here’s what’s coming to Savona Mill, and why it matters for the West End.
Savona Food Works: what’s planned
- Developer Portman Holdings announced Savona Food Works on May 27, 2026: a 30,000-square-foot food hall in Savona Mill’s historic Weave building.
- Plans call for about 25 food stalls, a full-service restaurant and bar, a coffee shop, a flower market, a rooftop bar, and indoor-outdoor seating and event space.
- It’s led by food hall operator Robert Montwaid, and it could open as early as 2027. No exact date has been set.
From textile mill to mixed-use neighborhood
- Savona Manufacturing Company built the Weave Mill in 1915–1916, added a spinning mill in 1921 and a warehouse in 1951. The mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
- Today it’s a 27-acre adaptive reuse project in the West End with creative offices and shops, and Portman says the full plan includes more than 600 homes, with the next phase of apartments set to start construction in 2026.
- It sits off South Turner Avenue near I-77, a short trip from Uptown.
Charlotte doesn’t have many old mills left, and the ones that get a second life become neighborhood anchors, just like Camp North End and Optimist Hall did. A food hall with a rooftop bar gives people a reason to come to the West End and stay. For nearby homeowners and buyers in Wesley Heights, Seversville and Biddleville, that kind of everyday destination tends to make an area more desirable over time.
